Internet Advertising . . .

ImageAt a time when traditional brick and mortar companies are starting to make significant use of internet advertising, the Interactive Advertising Bureau (IAB) has predicted that web advertising could exceed $20 billion this year.

The organization that represents more that 300 interactive companies made the prediction after it and PricewaterhouseCoopers released third quarter figures estimating internet advertisers spent $5.2 billion during the third quarter.

What the numbers don't tell us, however, is the size of an apparent surge this autumn in the use of internet ads by companies supplying traditional, rather than electronic, products and services.

This important development could bode well for continued growth in the sales of both internet ad space and the necessary commercial images, including stock photography. And, if this surge continues through the holiday season, IAB's $20 billion prediction could look overly conservative when fourth quarter figures are compiled.

A Better $49 Deal . . .

ImageGetty Images has responded to concerns about its new $49 per image web resolution pricing scheme with a set of restrictions that is more palatable to organizations representing image creators.

The company announced on this date that, from now on, the $49 price for rights-managed and rights-ready licenses will be limited to digital images no larger than 180 by 150 pixels (roughly 160 kilobytes in size) with no upward interpolation allowed. ImageThe "beta" version of Photolibrary's new web site –– with pop-up mid-sized previews, an easy-to-access advanced search panel, and a streamlined search refinement tool –– is now available for a test drive through a link on the company's current site.

The test web site bears some resemblance to the Corbis site with a pair of gray horizontal bands across the top and a slide show of images in a box below. Also like the Corbis site, an advanced search feature with several filters drops down from the top of the page. On some web sites the advanced search feature has its own page. Other sites place the extra options along the left margin.
