Fare Thee Well . . .

ImageEditor's note: Ron Rovtar and I first discussed the possibility of him providing the first paragraph or two of his articles from The Stock Asylum to be posted here at RMstockphoto.com back in December of 2006. Prior to that, Ron and I had carried on several discussions via email over a period of several months. Ron was one of the earliest contributors to this site and has stuck with us longer than any other contributor.

Even though Ron and I have not yet been able to meet and talk in person, I certainly consider Ron to be a friend and I wish him much success in his new endeavors. He will be missed.

More than a year ago my then 16-year-old son struck up an electronic "conversation" with a young lady in Pennsylvania

That conversation blossomed into a series of exchanges and the beginnings of a relationship involving various electronic services like instant messaging, e-mail and wireless phones.

Eventually, my son (and his parents) met this lovely and bright young person when she accompanied her father on a family trip to Colorado.

Since that meeting, she has visited our home for two extended periods and my son has flown to Pennsylvania on two other occasions.

As I prepared to put The Stock Asylum to bed for the last time this week, I spent a fair amount of time thinking about the impact new forms of electronic media have on human relationships.

Electronic devices like the telephone have for years let us communicate over long distances. But such devices rarely led to new friendships.

E-mail, instant messaging, websites, blogs, text messaging and various other forms of social media have added a new and important wrinkle to electronic communications. It now is very possible to make a new friend and build a significant relationship without standing in the same room as the other person. Ask my son.

The Future . . .
Written by Ron Rovtar, Managing Editor, the Stock Asylum

ImageThe Stock Asylum asked a number of stock photography veterans for their prognostications about the future of the industry.

Interestingly, the comments were generally optimistic –– though often with reservations and warnings attached.

This indeed is a good sign. Even six months ago we would have expected much more negative comments.

It seems as if the industry is waking from a bad dream. The effects of disturbed sleep linger. But many of those most attuned to the pulse of stock photography sense a new day approaching.

Read on to see what Ron Chappel, Steve Pigeon, Jim Pickerell, Christina Vaughan, Chris Ferrone, Haim Ariav, Patrick Donehue, Oleg Tscheltzoff and Zave Smith are thinking:

Industry Trends . . .

ImageThe Industry Measure has found that increasing numbers of stock photography buyers are making their purchases from a single image distributor.

In a report issued this date, the company that studies trends in the creative industries said "single-sourcing" is a growing trend in all major image buying groups except for internet design and development firms. These companies are increasingly shopping more than one stock distributor.

Single-sourcing by Internet design and development firms fell from 29 percent to 27 percent, The Industry Measure said in a prepared release.

The Industry Measure said internet design and development firms comprise the largest group of stock image buyers in terms of volume and dollars. This group purchases more stock imagery than the other three categories combined, the research firm said.

Closing Shop . . .

ImageIt is with considerable sadness that I am announcing today that The Stock Asylum will cease publication of new articles at the end of this week.

After much soul-searching (and more than a few sleepless nights) I have decided it is time to tackle new endeavors that will make it impossible to devote the required amount of effort to a website like The Stock Asylum.

However, the Stock Asylum will not entirely disappear. The website will remain at its current electronic location on the internet until at least the end of April.

Afterwards, you will find most of The Stock Asylum's articles and resources at the new Stock Artists Alliance (SAA) website. The organization of stock photographers has graciously agreed to archive the fruits of five years of labor at its new website, which is currently under construction.
